Social is the big buzz word these days. Everything you do the word ‘social’ is somehow involved. At work, one of the favorite intro question to answer is “what is my favorite social channel?”
For a long time, I always answer “Facebook”, “Linked In”, “Twitter”, “Tumblr”, etc. The other day, as I was revisiting my online activities, it all of a sudden hit me: the place I do most of my online social activities is actually games.
I joined LinkedIn in 2004. Joined Facebook in 2005. Have an account in every single social networking sites I can think of. Yet, my online presence is virtually none. I read a lot, but I don’t publish much.
Meanwhile, I started playing World of Warcraft in September 2009. In less than 2 weeks I’ve made 4 or 5 friends online, joined a guild, and in less than a year and a half time met several guildies in person, some even overseas. My guildies know more about me than most of my Facebook friends.
Started playing SWTOR a few months back, and noticed the same pattern developing.
I guess MMORPG is my favorite social channel.
